Since 1300, Rotterdam has evolved from a small settlement near the Rotte River to one of the largest and most modern ports in the world, the major foreign-trade centre of the Netherlands, and its second largest city. After nearly complete destruction during World War II, Rotterdam rebuilt its city centre, creating an impressive skyline. At present, the city hosts over 600,000 residents that represent a staggering 174 different nationalities.
The Maas River divides the city centre, which is reunited by the famous Erasmus Bridge, the symbol of Rotterdam. Along the banks of the Maas, countless small harbours can be found, each with its own unique character. Further downstream the industrial port of Rotterdam appears, the largest port in Europe.
In the Netherlands and abroad, Rotterdam is famous for its spectacular architecture, featuring many examples of innovative construction. The famous Cube Houses are certainly worth a visit. There are ample opportunities for further cultural exploration of the city, including Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the Wereldmuseum, the Maritime Museum and Kunsthal Rotterdam.
